"Eighty percent of Canadians live in urban areas, and unless we recognize that the health of a city, its well being, is vital to our way of life, Canada will never realize its full potential." -- Christopher Hume
The Renew Hamilton Speaker Series is set to launch under the title Conversations with Christopher Hume and Guests.
Mr. Hume is an urban affairs columnist with The Toronto Star and an acclaimed national media commentator. He is an advocate for promoting Canadian cities – including Hamilton – as key drivers of economic, social and environmental progress in an age of ideas and innnovation.
We are introducing an exclusive series of salon dinners devoted to inspired urban environments. The purpose is to help promote the regeneration of Hamilton’s built and natural environments, particularly in our downtown and adjacent neighbourhoods. The series is sponsored in part by Labourers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA).
Our inaugural event, titled Discovering the Obvious, takes place on THURSDAY JUNE 14 at Liuna Station.
OVERVIEW of JUNE 14 THEME Top designers have a near magical ability to transform urban blight to beauty. Success comes from putting people first while integrating existing built and natural assets into fresh and surprising combinations. The results are simple and elegant urban designs that lead to sustainable cities for the future. Christopher and guests will explore the power of urban design in the grand art and science of modern city building. The evening will feature a discussion on international best practices as well as links to Hamilton-based projects, including The Gore Master Plan and the waterfront.
Christopher’s guests on June 14 will be:

Earth to HCOC, come in, please:
What the hell are you guys smoking? Is it not bad enough that the recent planning meetup had a four figure entry fee?
The bane of this city has been its propensity for rarefied, top down ideation hype and planning. Three decades later, when we have a narrow chance to really "ReNew" this city, we instead embrace the same old nonsense -- by ensuring that 95% of those who have been rebuilding this city in the last decade are left out of this exquisite "Gourmet Planning Event".
I don't know about Dieter, Wayne or Rebecca or the HCOC guys -- but you Ken and Christopher of all the people at the banquet, don't the two of you get it?
