I agree that supporting and growing a diverse economy is very important and we can't put too many eggs in too few baskets. We can't ignore other sectors that produce goods and services - various forms of manufacturing, agriculture, transportation & warehousing, finance, business services, etc... nor should we ignore public sector industries where Hamilton already has a large portion of its employment.

But I have to ask how broadly you're defining "technology"? There are certain industries that have experienced bubbles (either globally, or regionally) or may be over-valued and due for a correction. But in the broader sense, technology and innovation are part of so many other sectors - not just communications and IT, but advanced manufacturing, materials, healthcare and medicine, environmental industries, food, and the list goes on. I think plenty of innovation continues across a whole spectrum of economic activities.

I didn't get the sense that the author/speaker was advocating for better leadership in a narrowly-defined range of tech industries. He chose to talk about specific examples, but that's all they were, at least based on how I read the speech.
