this is a great point. Look at the demand for new urban living here, even despite the cringe-inducing public realm- freeways, narrow/barren sidewalks, no trees etc.....

We could really see a totally different downtown in 5 years if we invested in complete, green streets all through the city and started implementing higher quality design standards such as those shown from Vancouver.

We can't go quite as far as Vancouver just yet, in part thanks to our small-town media and old-boys club that would freak out if city hall ever started trying to mandate what colour glass they can use in condo buildings....or could we? The results are in folks - developers made gobs of money and the city is one of the best in the world. Apparently, dictating glass colour hasn't hindered them, or driven away business. It's no different than our master-planned suburbs. They master-planned an urban city. And did a fabulous job. No developer there would even dream of showing up to a design review committee with a windowless, stucco box.

Let's go Hamilton. We can do this.
