Regarding the Guelph Civic League and its focus on voting...

I'm very aware of what they accomplished when they began their efforts. They determined a 'Set of Core Values' after canvassing the community, and as a result, they got a whole slew of incumbents voted out.

The issue I have with 'seeing how someone votes' is that taking that voting record and comparing it to the agreed-to community values is...well, a subjective process. And I'm not so sure the average resident...you know, the 60% that doesn't vote...is capable 'as it currently stands' of being able to discern whether or not a councillor has done right by their constituents...without going deeper.

I know that the Hamilton Civic League is moving forward with a similar initiative, but I'm hoping we don't end up fooling ourselves that this sums up the kind of engagement we need on a community level. It's a good tool, a piece of the puzzle, but to paraphrase the man from Stratford, "It's hardly the be-all and end-all."
