NiMH doesn't contain heavy metals like lead or cadmium, commonly found in the other baddies, but the electrolyte isn't the best thing for the dump. The best thing they have going for them is the high nickel content, which is valuable to recyclers. So valuable that recycling would practically pay for itself. If the auto industry's current track record of more than 95% of all lead acid batteries recovered means anything, I think NiMH will have a healthy life cycle. A small depsoit on the new battery repayable upon the return of the old one, just like lead acids, would remind the end users and small shops to turn them in.
