One of my best friends works for the railroad. The times they scrape people out of from under trains isn't often reported, but it goes out over the radios all the time. And then there's the simply inconsiderate nature of requiring a vehicle the size of a small town to hit the brakes before you smoothly jump out of the way at the last minute - there's a good chance they're going to end up having to stop the whole damn thing and inspect every single car (an hour or more) before they can get back to work. And while that sucks, it's still far better than getting smoked by a commuter train which travels far faster and more quietly than those. If that doesn't scare you, I know train-hoppers who've seen friends lose limbs or worse.

I'm not gonna tell you to never check out the tracks, because I often do. But proceed with caution: they're a lot more like a highway than you might think. And it isn't just clumsy drunk people, either - for every case of that I've heard there's at least one of 'death-by-iPod'.
