You've hijacked the stadium project and are using it as a beard to advance your urban renewal agenda.

The City's stated objectives tie the stadium project to the City's own "urban renewal agenda":

  • Support for public transit
  • Intensification of our downtown
  • Brownfield remediation
  • Economic spin-offs for established businesses
  • Increased tax assessments
  • Linkage to existing assets used by the public (ie. the harbour and downtown)

These goals, in turn, dovetail closely with the Future Fund's objectives:

  • Grow the city's economic base
  • Enhance the social fabric
  • Build community

It is because the West Harbour best meets these criteria that our City Councillors voted seven freaking times to affirm and reaffirm it. It is because the West Harbour best meets these criteria that the Mayor continues to support it as the best choice for the city. It is because the West Harbour best meets these criteria - criteria that are entirely consistent with our "agenda" at RTH - that RTH continues to support it as the best choice for the city.

Bob Young won't move Ti-Cats to West Harbour because he knows his business cannot thrive there.

He may know that. We must take him at his word, since he continues to refuse to release his business studies demonstrating he cannot run a sustainable football franchise at the West Harbour.

City staff punted when Councillor McHattie challenged them on Tuesday about this missing study. He asked, "Have [the Ticats] actually opened their books and demonstrated why [the West Harbour] doesn't work for us?"

City staff answered, "The Ticats shared with us a critique of the West Harbour site showing in their opinion why that site does not work for them."

That's simply not good enough when the Ticats are asking the City and upper levels of government to spend over $100 million on a new facility for them.

It's certainly not good enough that the new facility meets the team's objectives if it does not also meet the city's objectives.
