From the "many hands make light work" file: The Guardian (UK) seems to get it when it comes to collaboration:

After the Guardian got their hands on a half a million scanned pages of expense reports for British MPs, they created a web interface that allowed volunteers to scrutinize those documents and flag expenses that look like they warrant further investigation.

About 20,000 readers have pitched in, and after a few days they're already about a third of the way through the collection. The Guardian has been publishing reports based on the data collected this way:
