There seem to have been several factors involved in the closure of the funeral home apart from LRT, especially consolidation in the industry.

Local competitors say the writing had been on the wall for some time. Service Corporation International funerals typically cost more than those at independently-owned funeral homes, according to industry studies.

"It's sad, but I wasn't surprised at all," said Rob Wintonyk, co-owner of the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home in Waterloo.

"The numbers have changed so much over the years. As the corporations purchased them, and changed their pricing and staffing models, the public catches onto that."

It is also important to balance the closure with the opening of other businesses and compare the actual rate of closures with the usual churn of businesses opening and closing.

I do agree that a carefully staggered plan and good communication is important and that for businesses already struggling to survive the impact of major construction can push them over the edge.
