Hmmm... I suspect that what you are calling cobblestone is actually a brick surface.

Which is better than cobblestone, but brick or concrete tile has been phased out of use as a cycling surface in The Netherlands because asphalt is generally better.

Although if you really want a brick surface, I note that a type of brick has been developed that is suitable for cycling.

I would suggest that 99% of that danger is posed by car drivers. Here is an excellent before-and-after with video of an Amsterdam neighbourhood from the point of view of children. The "before" was 1972. Bear any resemblance to Hamilton today? See:
