I was reminded by the years you've noted here (2050 - I'll be old and grey or worse!) that Google has driven their driverless car over a million miles and counting and Nissan has already developed an electric car that can park itself and come pick you up when you've finished your shopping http://www.thenational.ae/lifestyle/moto...

It could well be that by 2050 we will all own little electric vehicles that drive themselves and join together in perfect little trains to use space as efficiently as possible. Navsat control would make traffic lights obsolete as the self driven cars would weave through intersections seamlessly.

Also, many people (perhaps most) would work from home or their local coffee shop as telecommuting becomes the norm for most thus taking even more pressure off of the streets and highways.

BTW, Nissan claims to be on schedule to release an autonomous car by 2020 - four years before our LRT is completed.
