The billion dollar deficit is exactly why we do need to deal with this monstrosity and other infrastructure like it. The per-lane-meter cost of maintenance is unaffordable. Has anyone said we should tear the whole thing down and replace it? I don't think so... but perhaps we should reduce the number of active lanes, eliminate the unnecessary ramp configurations, create more value by accommodating additional uses, and most importantly, have the discussion NOW about what we should do when it comes due for reconstruction rather than just put it back the way it was because "that's the way it was".
