The Toronto Star's Jennifer Bain takes readers on a wonderful romp through Hamilton's multicultural tapestry of restaurants.
Calling Hamilton "a city for food lovers", she celebrates the culinary possibilities of Hamilton's "well-established Italian, Polish, Portugese, German, Caribbean and Chinese communities, plus newly arrived Afghanis, Latin Americans, Somalis and Sudanese."
From Arabic pizzas at the Sindibad Market on York and Bay to corn tortillas at Mex-I-Can on James North to dosas and chaat papri at Phulkari Cafe on Queenston Rd., Bain traverses the length and breadth of our humble city in search of great food.
She finds a small but devoted ethnic restaurant scene, with "often only a handful of each kind to choose from instead of dozens. This makes life easier." She digs up niche restaurants, small take-out places and fleeting wonders.
The entire article is definitely worth reading, as is the companion piece, essentially a contact list of the restaurants Bain visited.
