Today's Hamilton Spectator has an op-ed by Tom Cooper about the role alternative media and blogs are playing in changing the political landscape in Hamilton.

It cites Citizens at City Hall (CATCH) and Raise the Hammer as two organizations that are "using electronic newsletters and web journals to keep Hamiltonians updated about happenings in local government."

CATCH particularly has had an interesting checks-and-balances impact at Hamilton council. Group volunteers routinely attend and transcribe council and committee meetings in their entirety, posting the detailed minutes on their website at www.hamiltoncatch.org.
