Fringe 2016 Review: Tippi Seagram's Happy Hour

Tippi Seagram's Happy Hour lives up to its title; go to this show, and you will spend the full hour smiling and laughing. The show is a well-polished performance by clever and very funny Colette Kendall. It is a small stage in the intimate Bright Room at the Staircase Theatre, but Tippi's larger-than-life personality fills the space with equal parts sass and charm.

The show is a one woman stand-up comedy routine done in character. Tippi Seagram is a fully developed, well rounded character who embraces being called a cougar as readily as she grasps her martini glass.

As much as Tippi likes her martinis, though, she is not a drunk or just a partier. Tippi believes she is on a sort of cultural charity mission - to share her incredible talent and give a few bits of advice to this culturally deprived city. Tippi shares bits of brash wisdom on matters such as sex and her own version of tough love parenting.

Colette Kendall knows how to connect with her audience and how to play around with willing volunteers. She will come off the stage and into the crowd. She asked if anyone was married and after joking with those couples, she asked if anyone was single. No one raised their hand.

Kendall is such a seasoned improviser she doesn't miss a beat or any opportunity for a quick witted comeback. It is clear she is having as much fun playing this character as the audience is having watching her.

This is not the first time Tippi has strutted across a comedy stage in Hamilton, but many of her jokes have been revised so that the show is current. While Tippi is smart enough to be accurate about politics, she is not politically correct.

Despite this, the humor does not come off as offensive, as we are all laughing together at Tippi's perspective on things.

This show is so much fun to watch, I highly recommend it!
