Raise the Hammer
Everyone deserves to be happy. That is the overriding theme from Oasis Love. Our lovelorn protagonist starts by talking and singing about his hopes for a 'great oasis love', to a place where he almost found it. With stories and songs he moves us to a place of hope which is imperfect, but still promising.
The preshow music and stage design suggested we were in an eatery with dining music in the background. Then, the singer starts singing and introducing us to his life and we realize he is talking about his dating issues but also dating generally.
The dating ghosting segment is hilarious, but you will have to see it for yourself to appreciate it.
Then, with a quick change of position to downstage, he is in an art gallery, looking at an intriguing painting.
Next, after what seems to him like an odd conversation with a bystander at the gallery, he finds out that bystander is actually the artist, Jason. He and Jason hook up and start into a relationship.
We find out, through more stories and songs, that this relationship was not his oasis love. Suffice it to say that our protagonist realizes, after a period of feeling sorry for himself, that "I deserve happiness" and he sets out to try to find love again. He creates his own love anthem, even though he said he would not.
Johnny Salib has a wonderful voice and uses it well to transition from song to song or from song into scene. The background music is appropriate and while the set is very basic, it is sufficient for its purpose. (There is some vulgarity and mature themes. The play may not be suitable for a younger audience.) Our audience was carried along by the humour and hope.
