Mark Chamberlain Discusses Casino on Laircast

By RTH Staff
Published February 21, 2013

Powergroup has just posted its latest Chat from the Lair, an hour-long conversation with Mark Chamberlain, CEO of Trivaris and a community leader with a focus on prosperity and social equity.

It's an intense, heated, and at times deeply personal exploration of the question about whether, where and how we should allow OLG to put a casino in Hamilton.

The people in Flamborough seem to want one though. So should we not let them have it if they want it?

I'm not a fan of casinos, at all, but the Flamborough issue is a muddy one. They seem to mainly want the gambling revenue to save the horse industry. If they're willing to make that deal and it avoids a downtown casino then so be it I guess.

Interesting discussion. I like Mark Chamberlain's points about placing people first, and placing what is happening here in a broader global context and how we can't just do whatever we want and ignore the global context.

The discussion around exposing 3% of our population to a potential gambling addiction so 97% can have some fun was interesting as well.

Very eye opening debate. Chamberlain was armed to the teeth with numbers that prove a downtown c@sino is a bad idea.

The only thing Lieberman could come back with is a silly argument rule that you're not allowed to oppose a downtown c@sino unless you also fight OLG at the provincial level. If you aren't fighting to change or stop OLG then you're opposition to a dt casino is hypocritical.

That's what the downtown c@sino lobby is reduced to, playing childish gotcha games.

With statistics like that, I can't help but wonder what a similar analysis would show of cocaine users. Most I know who dabble infrequently show little risk of addiction, and tend to be a lot more likely to 'grow out of it' than end up in need of rehab. Economically, most of us simply couldn't afford to get hooked. Why deprive 90+% of our city the joy of an occasional line for their sake?

Mark Chamberlain made point after point to support the argument against a casino downtown.

Loren Leiberman's arguments were basic and unsound. There appeared to be no fact & all opinion.

One of the most coherent casino discussions to date.

I agree with Mr Chamberlain, if every municipality is going to introduce a inner city casino, why doesn't Hamilton do something different?

Good God, man. I'm sympathetic to the fact that you're likely not a first language English speaker but you've got to take more care with your spelling, let alone grammar/ syntax. Perhaps you could type your responses into Word first, spell check the thing and then post it here. Otherwise, people won't take anything you say seriously. Give it some thought, please, for the love of God.

Don't get angry at a small man like Lauren Libelman. Between ripping off the city for FoF and now this he is to be ignored and pitied. Graham Crawford got pissy with him. LL is just trolling in real life.

Ah, but economics don't matter once you are.

Libel man! HaHaHa! That is awesome. Cruelest thing you can do to LL is ignore him. Observe how Ryan ignores Mahesh on this site. Very powerful stuff.
