LRT Advocate Resigns in 'Disgust' from Citizen Advisory Committee

Nicholas Kevlahan, a member of the City's Rapid Transit Citizen Advisory Committee (RTCAC) and an outspoken advocate for light rail transit, has resigned in "disgust" from the committee as a protest against City Manager Chris Murray's directive to suspend work on LRT beyond what is contractually obligated with the Province.

Calling the directive "an insulting slap in the face" to committee volunteers and rapid transit staff, Kevlahan urges all RTCAC members to follow his example and resign.

Here is the text of his resignation letter:

I am resigning from this committee, effective immediately, as a protest at the decision by the Mayor and Chris Murray "to suspend all current direct and indirect activities of the Light Rail Transit Initiative other than any work activities required to be completed under the agreement."

Please communicate my disgust with our treatment to Mr Murray, and explain that this is no way to make Hamilton "the best place to engage citizens".

I urge all RTCAC members to resign in protest as Chris Murray has unilaterally suspended all LRT activity, including the land use study, with no vote from council or advance notice to the Rapid Transit team. Please see the email copied below.

This is an insulting slap in the face for the hundreds of hours we've given to the City and the hard work of the rapid transit team.

Good for him. You have to stand up for what you believe in.

I believe you've left a committee or two in a huff yourself.

I went to the public meetings. Nicholas, his staff and volunteers did do a great job. Such a shame all that work, hours and $$ all to waste.

Interesting that WRCU2 and 905 Hamilton said, essentially, the same thing and have very different vote totals
