Municipal Election 2010

Candidate Decision Matrix for Ward 2 Voters

By RTH Staff
Published October 21, 2010

Michael Borrelli and Megan Platts, Ward 2 residents and the hosts of myboytheriotgirl on CFMU 93.3, have created a voters guide for Ward 2 residents.

Using data from the RTH Elections Site, The Hamiltonian, the Hamilton Spectator, candidate websites and various other sources, they have compiled an impressive matrix that allows Ward 2 voters an easy way to compare the choices.

They've even provided a printable version so the discriminating and now well-informed voter can "crumple it into a ball and throw it at the first candidate you see".

Some chuckles in there, like the entry for Lloyd Furguson, and the headers.

Absolutely fantastic work, Michael & Megan! All humour aside, it juxtaposes the candidates really well. Any chance of the two of you could be persuaded to make a Mayoral table?

Michael and Megan

Excellent work. I realize much of the information comes from others sources, as you very clearly state, but I must tell you as a Ward 2 resident, this is a really handy, interactive, summary of the candidates in my Ward. Thanks very much to both of you for doing it and thanks to RTH for posting it.

Hi Laura F,

Glad you (and others) find it useful, and I have no shortage of thanks to the fine folks at RTH and Hamiltonian for doing the tough work.

RE: A Mayor's list, we'd love to do it, but we'll have to stop short of full-on committing to do it before Monday since it might require more time to do it justice than we have available. That Ward 2 matrix was what we could put together over a few weeks working between the time our little one went to sleep and us subsequently passing out. But if we manage to pull it off, I'm sure RTH will be the first to know.

Speaking of Ward 2, I received an email about some rally against DiIanni today because of his troubles in 2006. BUT it also stated that Matt Jelly was barred from running in 2006 because he failed to file a campaign return for his 2003 campaign.

Is this true?

The press release also notes that Di Ianni was not banned from running in a subsequent election, whereas Matt Jelly, a candidate for Ward 2 in the current election, was banned from running in 2006 after failing to submit a financial report for his 2003 mayoral run.

According to Mary Lou Tanner, Mr. Jelly's campaign manager, he filed no report because his 2003 campaign had no expenses and accepted no donations. "This was an error and will not recur."

For this election, Jelly is not accepting corporate or union donations, and made his finances available on October 18, 2010. Ms. Tanner added, "The Matt Jelly 2010 Campaign is not affiliated with the press conference today."
