Raise the Hammer
According to Citizens at City Hall (CATCH), Hamilton City Council gave their usual attention to Hamilton's official guiding document, Vision 2020, at a recent planning committee meeting.
After bumping the annual report (and guest speaker Wayne Wescott, the chief executive officer for the International Council on Local Environmental Issues from Australia) three times, Council could scarcely be bothered to stick around and listen.
By the time Wescott was finally able to make the presentation, only three committee members actually stayed for the whole thing.
Both councillor Dave Mitchell and Mayor Di Ianni left just before it started. Murray Ferguson also left before it started, but returned part way through, only to disappear for another 25 minutes. Bill Kelly arrived half way through, apparently to maintain quorum when Ferguson left. To that point, Kelly had only attended the first 15 minutes of the meeting.
That left ... councillors Pearson, McHattie, Bratina, Merulla and committee chair Terry Whitehead. Merulla left briefly during the presentations, and Whitehead was out for eight minutes although it was the first time the chair had left the meeting all day.
It's almost enough to make you wonder if they're really as committed to sustainable development as they claim...
