RTH in the Toronto Sun

Shameless promotion: RTH Contributor Adrian Duyzer was quoted in an article by Michele Mandel in today's Toronto Sun.

The article, which reports on the high-stakes manoeuvring between the NHL board of governors and Hamilton Coyoyes hopeful Jim Balsillie, notes that some critics have argued Hamilton doesn't have a big enough market to support an NHL franchise - or else doesn't deserve it.

That angers Adrian Duyzer, a local web developer and contributor to the Raise the Hammer website.

"I don't know a single person who works in a steel mill," he says of the old cliches being trotted out to slam his city.

And while he'd welcome an NHL team, the hockey fan doesn't believe that it's the magic bullet they need.

"Some people here, and definitely elsewhere, think we need a white knight to charge into this city to save us from this 'decaying dump,' " he says with derision. "We don't need a hockey team to transform us, the transformation is already underway."

It would be cool if RTH opened up a bit with some way to post rants / micro-blogging (perhaps a feature to make the topic INTO an actual blog / article, then submit to editor). There are times when I come here and what to express a thought on a topic for debate, but hope and wait for the topic to come up instead.

I think what Adrian said is dead-on.

The real transformation: non-negative Hamiltonians not curling in a corner when the berating negativity of some takes over a conversation.

People give in to the idea of bashing up Hamilton easily, unfortunately.

I'm a big fan of Hamilton, but I don't mind Hamilton-bashing as much as most. I think it's futile to try and stop it, and probably best to just point out some positives, or that it's not as bad as their bashing makes it out to be. You have to do it lightly though, or they'll just ignore you altogether.

That said, I think Hamilton will always have a healthy level of self-deprecation, and I think it's appropriate, especially in humour. If a city like Hamilton can't joke about itself, then we're in trouble, that's my opinion.

Congrats on the exposure! You know you're a success when your Mayor is writing Articles for your Blog Site!

re: Hamilton Bashing How can you NOT bash the Scooter Capital of the World!? That's my #1 Insult about this City; 'Hamiltonians are SO obsessed with cars, that even once diagnosed with a dilapidating disease -- or just plagued with laziness --, they still have the Hamilton-Given Right to a Motor Vehicle!' Ugh! Frustrating!
