RIP Randy Steele

By RTH Staff
Published May 22, 2009

Randy Steele has died after a long struggle with throat cancer.

An iconic Hamiltonian, Randy will be remembered across the city for his unfailingly warm and courageous bearing, his feisty news and local culture reporting for CHCH (including his "Steele's Town" feature), and his gorgeous photography after the loss of his voice forced him to find a new means of sharing his keen eye for charming details that most other people overlook.

He is survived by his wife Maggie and four daughters.

Randy Steele was passionate about music and his career as a journalist. His interest in promoting Hamilton was pure. I always felt blessed and excited when Randy would interview me or cover one of my projects.

Randy, we go way back man! I am deeply saddened to see you go. This year's gig is dedicated to you!!

Until we meet again,

Jean-Paul Gauthier

I'm very shocked and saddened by this news. Randy was a great person and his photography is amazing. I had hoped to meet him in person one day. May he rest in peace.

Did anyone in Hamilton not know and love Randy? Few people are blessed with such generosity of spirit, such warmth of personality, such mischievous delight in 'afflicting the comfortable and comforting the afflicted', such a rich pedigree of creative outpouring in so many media, such an upbeat outlook on life, or such a lovely, loving family and community - never mind all of them in spades! Could it be any different? It's no wonder he was surrounded by such wonderful people, you couldn't be around Randy and not be charmed and disarmed by his impish personality or moved by his works. That the cancer should snatch away his voice before taking his life was a cruel cut, but even that couldn't silence him - he just moved another passion, his sharp, incisive photography, toward the front. We are all both richer for having known him and poorer for having lost him so soon. My heart breaks for his beautiful family, for they know and feel most keenly what he meant.
