Councillors Propose Salary Freeze

Councillors Chad Collins, Scott Duvall, Sam Merulla, Bernie Morelli and Terry Whitehead just issued a press release proposing a salary freeze for Councillors and non-union employees across the municipal government.

Over the last several months, we have seen a severe decline in the global economy. As City Council enters budget deliberations for the 2009 budget, we will be working with our Council colleagues to identify efficiencies and opportunities for savings in an effort to minimize the impact to the taxpayer during this difficult time.

At the first available opportunity, we will be proposing a salary freeze for Councillors and non-union employees. If adopted, this could potentially result in $2,000,000 in savings for 2009. This represents a proposed 3.25% increase for non-union employees.

How noble for those councillors to propose such a move! Is it, or is it hypocracy? That non-union staff at City Hall should have their salaries cut thus reducing their standard of living while all the Councillors have to lose is a stipend from the Pork Barrel. How Noble! If ever an opportunity presented itself for a Union takeover of salaried workers, this is it. A bread and butter issue cannot be equated with a supercillious gesture..oh where is Harry Greenwood when he is needed.

The non-union workers had better talk to the Union workers about this travesty. An example of how these clowns on council think, take the bread from the table of people who can't fight back. It's the council who are over-paid and pick up the perks, let them do the job as a public service and claim only for lost earnings and prove that they lost them.
