Lake-to-Lake Overnight Bicycle Trip

Participate in this exciting fundraiser to support Environment Hamilton's research and advocacy work.

Bike lanes and bike sharing are great additions to Hamilton, but how about a lakeside campground you can reach easily by bicycle? It's less than 70 km from the Hamilton waterfront to the Haldimand Conservation Area campground on the shores of Lake Erie - half on a rail trail and the rest on quiet country roads with no highway riding.

You can check it out on the Lake to Lake Ride being organized by Environment Hamilton for the weekend of June 14-15. And if camping is not your thing, the event includes a one-day there-and-back trip to Caledonia almost entirely off-road.

The details of this fundraising ride can be found on this EH page but briefly are as follows:

Leave from Bayfront Park at 9 am on Saturday, June 14. Use the Escarpment Rail Trail, the Chippewa Rail Trail and a couple of short road sections to get to Caledonia by lunch. After lunch, use back-country paved roads to the shores of Lake Erie to complete the 70 km ride, or turn around in Caledonia and cycle back to Hamilton.

If you go all the way, Environment Hamilton will transport your camping gear, provide your campsite, Saturday supper and Sunday breakfast, as well as water stops both ways along the route. If you want to avoid climbing the escarpment out of the city, there's an option to start and end at Stone Church Road.

So that makes four choices:

Registration is $50 per rider for the full trip or $25 for the Caledonia and back - that guarantees you a space. Each rider is also asked to raise donations to at least match their registration fee to support the well-known advocacy work of Environment Hamilton.

Their latest project is BAM - Bicycle Air Monitoring - cyclists (volunteers welcome) willing to attach a portable air monitor and GPS to their bike to measure fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) along their commute or recreational rides.

The results will allow Environment Hamilton to provide an on-line publicly accessible air quality map and take action in areas where monitoring identifies poor air quality.

You can help out with work like that even if you can't ride on June 14-15, simply by pledging to support a registered rider:

The route map is posted on Google Maps.

Registration is required by midnight on June 8 and there are prizes for the top three pledge earners for each ride.

".. Citizens at City Hall, a volunteer group that has monitored city affairs for nearly eight years.." Didn't CATCH start after the 2003 election that brought that Di Ianni guy in? So RTH could update to over ten years of real good important service by the people who make this CATCH site. Thanks
